Expert Consultant

Born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Dr. Ian Sutherland has developed a dynamic career as an academic leader, educator, researcher, and consultant. Ian is Associate Dean for Research and Director of PhD Studies at IEDC–Bled School of Management (Slovenia) and holds appointments and leadership positions within a number of institutions and associations including: Adjunct Professor of Leadership at the Warsaw University of Technology Business School (Poland), Fellow of the Peter Pribilla Stiftung – Technische Universität München (Germany), Co-Convener of the Deans, Directors and Chairs Affinity Group of the International Leadership Association (USA).

An internationally recognized expert in the art and business nexus, Ian was originally trained as a professional musician. Holding B.Mus. (Hons) and M. Mus. Degrees from the School of Music of Memorial University (Canada), he completed his PhD in Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Exeter (UK) working under Prof. Dr. Tia DeNora. Today he brings these backgrounds together combining expertise in sociology, philosophy, creativity, music and leadership studies. A sought after speaker and facilitator he has delivered courses, workshops, seminars and lectures in over 30 countries. As a consultant and organizational development practitioner he has worked with companies in the pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics, telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing and defense industries.

Dr. Sutherland’s work occurs at the intersection of the arts and business. In particular he focuses on leadership practice, creative and strategic processes, leveraging diversity and experiential arts-based methods of management and leadership development. Ian is the founder of the Arts and Leadership Learning Community of the International Leadership Association, co-founding editor of the journal Music and Arts in Action and the author/co-author of articles appearing in Academy of Management Learning & Education; Management Learning; Organizational Aesthetics; Advances in Developing Human Resources; Business Leadership Review; Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society; Emotion Review; Journal of Visual Art Practice. He is also co-author of the book “Key Concepts in Leadership” (Sage, 2012) with Prof. Jonathan Gosling and Dr. Stephanie Jones. He is currently completing a new book “Arts-based learning: Memories with momentum” for Palgrave-Macmillan (2016). Prior to moving to Slovenia, Dr. Sutherland held appointments as Associate Research Fellow at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Leadership Studies (UK) and Assistant Professor at Memorial University (Canada).
